My Chincoteague Pony

Today we read the most wonderful picture book by Susan Jeffers. I immediately connected with the main character, a little girl who wants nothing more from life than her own horse. She works hard and saves her money, eagerly anticipating the auction day in July. At the auction, she is outbid, but before she can leave emptyhanded, strangers start giving her whatever money they can spare. Unlike me, she actually realizes her dream of owning her own pony.

This book shared a powerful message of the importance of "paying it forward". The girl in the story saves her money and returns to the auction year after year, helping young girls just like herself become horse owners, too.

Even the boys in my class applauded when the girl got her pony!
